HOUTHI STRIKES HIT SAUDI ARABIA, 73 INJURED AS REGIONAL WAR WIDENS RIYADH / DUBAI — September 8, 2026 Iran-aligned Houthi forces launched a major series of attacks against southern Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, striking civilian, economic and energy infrastructure and injuring 73 people, including women and children, according to Saudi authorities. The attacks hit sites in Abha, Khamis Mushait, Jazan and Najran, marking a significant escalation in the rapidly widening Middle East conflict. Saudi Arabia's Energy Ministry said fires broke out at several affected facilities, forcing the temporary suspension of some operations while emergency crews worked to contain the damage and secure the sites. The Houthis said they had targeted Saudi Aramco facilities and the King Khalid air base using ballistic missiles and drones. Saudi authorities have not independently confirmed all of the targets claimed by the group. The Saudi-led coalition described the attacks as a “dangerous escalation” and said it would take the measures necessary to deter further strikes and defend the kingdom. The renewed confrontation comes as fighting between Houthi forces and Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces has intensified, threatening to unravel the relative calm that had largely prevailed between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis since 2022. The consequences could extend far beyond the battlefield. Saudi Arabia is one of the world's most important oil exporters, and attacks affecting its energy infrastructure immediately raise concerns about global supply. Oil prices climbed following reports of the strikes, adding further pressure to markets already dealing with severe instability across the Middle East. The attacks also add another front to a regional crisis already involving Iran, the United States, Israel and several Iranian-aligned armed groups. For Riyadh, the latest strikes represent not only a renewed security threat along its southern frontier but the possibility of being drawn much more deeply into the expanding regional confrontation.
